35% of SA Women are FAT

Obesity is fast becoming a problem in South Africa. According to the Non-Communicable Diseases Indaba, about a third of South Africans are fat.35% of SA Women are FAT.
Tobacco use, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet and the harmful use of alcohol are some of the causes.  SA Non-Communicable Diseases Alliance Victoria Pinkley-Atkinson says, “A lot of people over 50-years-old have a high rate of obesity and physical inactivity in the world is at the highest rate. So that is really bad news. We encourage people to walk and change the way they eat. People must now eat healthy foods.”

Over 35% of adults in SA are fat and four out of five people have a Non-Communicable Disease (NCD). Government says if not checked, deaths from Non-Communicable Diseases could overtake those caused by tuberculosis (TB) and HIV.

KwaZulu-Natal Health MEC Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo says, “If we don’t do anything or heighten our campaign on Non-Communicable Diseases, I am repeating again in 2030 you will probably have a reverse situation TB, HIV/Aids will not be number one killer it will be Non-Communicable Diseases at that time. So, I’m saying let’s get involved in such campaigns.” Activists blame government for failing to tackle Non-Communicable Diseases the same way they do HIV and Aids.
