Renowned South Africa Actor Laid To Rest
Friends and loved ones on Tuesday gathered at the Leondale Community Hall on Gauteng’s East Rand to pay their last respects to veteran actor Boikie Mohlamme.
Mohlamme passed away from heart failure in hospital on Wednesday, 27 August, after being admitted with chest pains earlier in the day. He was laid to rest at South Park (Chris Hani Cemetery) after a funeral service attended by the likes of Congress of South African Trade Unions’ general secretary, Zwelinzima Vavi, and SABC COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng. Hundreds of people also attended a memorial service in Mohlamme’s honour on Monday, among them some of the Generations cast members who were recently fired for going on strike. Mohlamme was one of the founding members of the Creative Workers' Union of SA, and is remembered for his lifelong efforts to ensure that artists are given a decent living and proper working conditions.
According to the SABC website, actress Lillian Dube - who is known for her role as Sister Bettina in Soul City and who was a dear friend of Mohlamme - injected some humour into the sombre memorial service during her tribute to the legendary actor. “I greet you all in the hall, even those who have just been fired from Generations!” she is quoted as having said. “When I heard that 16 actors were fired, I knew there was going to be a big stink. When this soapie started, there was no food for actors until ntate Mohlamme stepped in. I’m sure he was killed by what is currently happening at the SABC.”
And poking fun at the SABC’s currently controversial COO, added: “We support Hlaudi Motsoeneng because some of us have no matric either.” Aside from his work as renowned playwright, TV producer and cultural activist, Mohlamme is well known for his role as Markus in 1989 Afrikaans film ‘’n Pot Vol Winter’, and also for roles in films including ‘Warriors from Hell’ and ‘Taxi to Soweto’.
Mohlamme is survived by three children and three grandchildren. His actress wife Roseline Morapedi died in a car crash in September 1997. Rest in peace Boikie Mohlamme.. You're such a great actor. what do you say about him?
