Bald And Beautiful Joan Lunden Opens Up About Her Battle With Breast Cancer

In June Joan Lunden announced that she was battling a very aggressive form of breast cancer, and now the former Good Morning America anchor graces the cover of People magazine and chats candidly about her struggle with the disease.

Lunden, 64, has already been through several rounds of chemotherapy, and on Tuesday she underwent surgery to remove a tumor. Lunden phoned in to The Today Show on Wednesday to discuss her new magazine cover, and she revealed that she will join the show as a special correspondent during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.

"It was such a tough decision. As a parent, I worried how my kids would think," Joan said about going bald for the cover shot. "And it wasn’t the comfortable decision — knowing you were going to be seen by everyone in such a vulnerable way — but I know it was the right decision."

"I knew I could be a voice for a quarter of a million women who are diagnosed every year with breast cancer, and I wanted to show that your health is more important than your hair," she continued. "Your hair grows back after you stop chemo, and then you have your life."

Joan said she consulted with her kids, and her 11-year-old son, Max, told her to "definitely do it without hair." Joan tells the mag, "I had to make this big decision about whether or not to do the cover with no hair. It certainly isn't the comfortable way to go, but I decided I was going to try and help others and show women that this isn't the end of the world. You can go on – and that was hugely empowering."
