President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Condemns Human Rights Abuse By Security Agencies, Says It Must Be Investigated.

Human rights abuse

Following the recent reports by the Amnesty International on the several abuses on Human Rights by men of the security agencies across Nigeria, and since then, this is has continued to stir up the polity, as people both at home and in diaspora have continuously called on the President 'GEJ' to  look into this and redress this issue to avoid further occurrences.

The President during his declaration speech yesterday to mark open the 3-day International Workshop on Civil Military Cooperation held at the National Defence College in Abuja, and was hosted by the National Security Adviser and the European Union stated that the issue of human rights abuses that have so far been alleged against the security agents in the country were exaggerated and must be carefully looked into.

Mr. President in his exact words states that;

“We have taken very serious reports from some international organisations about perceived human rights abuses by our security force during military operations.

“Findings have generally shown that these reports are indeed exaggerated.
“I can recount an incident in 1992. I cannot say exactly when, but a newspaper came out with photographs of soldiers raping girls on the street of a community called Choba and we were all alarmed that soldiers were raping women.

“Choba, incidentally, is not a community that is hidden. That is where the University of Port-Harcourt is located. Investigations were later made, even by civil society groups. People asked questions and at the end of the day, there was no incident like that at all.

“This is why we must review use of military camouflage and fatigue by military and paramilitary agencies.

“These are being abused and people who are not supposed to use them are using them.”

No one would ever give in to any kind of abuse of human rights no matter the country, so it wouldn't be good if this continues to be experienced in Nigeria. This is a condemn-able act and it should be stopped with immediate effect.
