Patients with cholera
It has been reported by Prof. Alice Nte, who is a pediatrician with the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, today being Saturday, the 7th day of February, that there has been an outbreak of cholera in the Ikuru town in Andoni local government council of Rivers State.
Prof. Alice made this known to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), that the government and health stakeholders should endeavor to come to the plight of the public, especially by making available good and portable drinking water, and also decent lavatories to curb the danger of this disease.
In her words, she said, “Our challenge in this locality is the absence of potable water and proper sewage system.
“Cholera may spread faster in this terrain because of our traditional occupation, feeding habit, and defecation.
“In the riverside area, we defecate in the river, fish in the same river, eat of the various sea foods from the same water body,”
She therefore enjoined the people to ensure that they wash thoroughly their hands with clean water and soap whenever the make use of the toilets to prevent the possible contamination of themselves with such disease as cholera
